Title frame for Jacob Two-Two. Animation Comedy Educational. Patricia R. Well, it was better, but still not very good.

Probably because this would have been my reading level about 5 years ago. The story wasn't very deep, and they didn't give many details, so I was a little confused at some points.

Younger kids probably wouldn't care t Ok Younger kids probably wouldn't care though. So, it was an okay book, but better for like 3rd or 4th grader.

Apr 01, Penny McGill rated it it was amazing Shelves: for-kids. We loved to read this book out loud to the girls and once, a few years back, Christopher Plummer came to Stratford and read this book with the illustrations projected on to a screen behind him to support a charity that I've forgotten.

I bought tickets to take my mother and the girls. My mother fell asleep, my oldest daughter squirmed but our youngest daughter - probably 4 or 5 at the time - loved it.

She loved it and laughed louder than most of the people in the audience. I remember that event We loved to read this book out loud to the girls and once, a few years back, Christopher Plummer came to Stratford and read this book with the illustrations projected on to a screen behind him to support a charity that I've forgotten.

I remember that event like it was one of the bright spots in their childhood because it blended so many great things at one - going to Stratford to see something live with a big crowd, taking my mom, seeing Christopher Plummer live he spoke so well of Mordecai Richler before he began the reading and the thrill of that voice reading those great words.

It was wonderful. This is a book that all kids should read and then they can forever make jokes about being like little Jacob and going to the corner store to get a tomato.

Jacob Two Two was a book that stuck with me from child hood. I don't know how many times I heard it read aloud or read it myself as a child, but it was definitely more than once!

Jacob's perception of the world is so honest that concepts from the book make for repeatable jokes with one's own children. For example, the whole concept of yesterday, today and tomo Jacob Two Two was a book that stuck with me from child hood.

For example, the whole concept of yesterday, today and tomorrow - my sons will say at dinner "Ahh, tell us again the part where Jacob thinks today is tomorrow!

A perennial favourite and not to be missed! Mar 27, Melinda rated it really liked it Shelves: childrens , childhood-classic , pop-sugar-challenge.

Well this was certainly the wander down memory lane for me. I remember reading this book way back in well I think it was read to me at that stage and I have read it a few times in the intervening years.

It was funny to go back and revisit the book - of course, the language and the concepts were a little dated, a little naive, a little less PC, but truly this book did make me a bit nostalgic, for those easier times, when you were young and had no worries and all you wanted to do was grow u Well this was certainly the wander down memory lane for me.

May 01, Rebecca McNutt rated it really liked it. A strange but likeable and well-written children's book, also it's really nostalgic, I remember reading this in the first grade and I really enjoyed its creative storytelling and funny illustrations.

Feb 01, Courtney Perry rated it it was amazing. This has been on my TBR list forever, so glad to finally mark it off, beautiful book :.

Dec 17, Luke rated it really liked it Shelves: reread-to-my-kids. I still have a fond childhood memory of a play by a local theatre company based on this book.

I remember being horrified by the Hooded Fang and feeling hope and enthusiasm every time Child Power appeared. But it's amazing how much a book like this gets dated over the passage of time -- this one moreso than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I'm afraid.

Jacob Two-Two can't turn on a TV without getting snow on the screen -- what's that today?! He can't slice bread without it being a foot thick on I still have a fond childhood memory of a play by a local theatre company based on this book.

He can't slice bread without it being a foot thick on one end and thin as paper on the other Even the idea of "private property signs being put on vacant lots" loses its meaning when our kids unfortunately don't explore neighbourhoods as much as they used to!

Nevertheless, my daughter seemed to enjoy it as much as my son did when I read it to him when he turned 6!

Feb 06, Melinda Christensen rated it liked it Shelves: fantasy , children-s-lit. Jacob Two-Two is a little boy who is not afraid of anything.

He probably learned that from his siblings, the Fearless O'Toole and the intrepid Shapiro, who wore "Child Power" tee shirts and capes.

Since Jacob said everything twice, he got into trouble with adults. One day, an adult was insulted by him, so he was sent to children's prison.

He met the Hooded Fang there, who had every child trembling in his shoes. But Jacob wasn't afraid; the Hooded Fang had a secret that Jacob was aware of.

Find ou Jacob Two-Two is a little boy who is not afraid of anything. Find out the Hooded Fang's secret, and how Jacob saves the imprisoned children.

The author understands children's imaginations, and writes with wit and humor. Apr 18, Arwyn King rated it liked it.

Richler seems the most appropriate author given the material; his writing so exaggerated and fanciful and almost bedtime-story-like, combined with his Dahl-esque hatred of institutional authority and the hypocrisies of the adult world Jacob Two-Two, known for always repeating himself out of habit, is accused of rude behaviour and shipped off to Slimer's Isle to learn some manners, only to start a rebellion amongst the other kids and end up making some new friends instead!

Richler brings a fun and humorous world to life with a colourful cast that will have young readers laughing the whole way through.

How is Jacob going to prove himself in such a scary and desolate place? Enjoyable, but I had to read it my daughter as quite a few of the words were too hard for her.

Oct 31, Nancy Wilson rated it it was amazing. Loved this book as a kid. This book is a classic This has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid and I very much enjoyed sharing with my own children!

So weird and great. Charming story that was required reading for my upper level Children's Literature course.

Apr 24, Joejava rated it really liked it. A book that was read to me by my mom. This is a somewhat scary book for kids but I enjoyed it.

May 21, Zoe rated it it was amazing. One of my most favorite childhood stories. Our teacher read this to us in Grade 5, and I really enjoyed it.

I remember that this book scared me when I read it as a little girl. Now reading it as a mom and someone who works with children I wanted to be kind and cheerful and make sure all my little people now that adults aren't so scary.

Maybe more of a book for adults than kids?? Mar 02, Aubrey rated it really liked it. Aren't all the monsters in the world just in need of hugs and kisses?

I used to love watching the television show for Jacob-Two-Two so I'm happy this book was on the syllabus for Children's Literature.

It's funny though, that a book so highly redeemed as Canadian even to have a television show based on the book set in Canada, when in reality the book is set in England.

This can be explained though. Mordecai Richler was a very famous Canadian author who moved between England and Canada in his life.

Most of his children who are named after characters in the book no I used to love watching the television show for Jacob-Two-Two so I'm happy this book was on the syllabus for Children's Literature.

Most of his children who are named after characters in the book now live in Canada because in his life Richler moved between England and Canada.

It is possible that later in the Jacob-Two-Two series the characters moved to Canada. I still find it funny that even the theatrical film takes place in Canada though.

It's hard to write a review for a book so short when I don't want to spoil anything! If you've seen the full length movie the book is exactly like it, DO NOT take the television episode of the Hooded-Fang as what actually happens.

I have no idea what they did but they screwed up BIG time. The movie always frightened me as a kid. The dark island that Jacob is sent to as well as the bleak life the children live is pretty terrifying.

Now that I'm older I can confidently say that the book didn't scare me, but brought me back to the times when I used to watch the movie with my sister.

It's full of adventure, and features an amazing protagonist in Jacob who inspires kids to try their very hardest to succeed. I'll admit right from the start, I'm totally biased when it comes to this children's novel.

I remember days long passed when we had the audio version of this book on tape cassettes , and we would sit in front of the tape player, me, my sister, and my dad, and listen to this book over and over again.

Reading this book again, as an adult, brought back all of those fond memories, and for that reason, it is hard to say whether I love this story for what it is, or for what it reminds me of.

But, with I'll admit right from the start, I'm totally biased when it comes to this children's novel.

But, with that being said, I think that any story that can bring you such fond memories, especially of reading as a child, is deserving of five stars.

It wasn't until several novels later that I realized that the author of one of my favourite childhood stories is also the author of several of my favourite adult novels.

Dec 18, Jacob O'connor rated it really liked it. I inherited my love of reading from my mother. I would marvel at her bookshelves, and I could always find her at the end of the couch, unsweetened ice tea in hand, nose in her latest paperback.

Mom would sometimes take me to the library, which beat Disney World any day. I could get lost in that place, thumbing through books and exploring shelves.

I recall the afternoon she brought Jacob Two-Two home for me. I was stoked that the main character had my name. The book seemed gigantic, and the vocab I inherited my love of reading from my mother.

The book seemed gigantic, and the vocabulary was baffling how many 6 year olds know "nefarious"? Returning to it 30 years later, I didn't remember much.

Some of the illustrations tickled my nostalgia, but not much from the story itself. Richler's themes are the absurdity of childhood imagination and the pitfalls of taking ourselves too seriously.

I'm looking forward to reading this to my daughter in a few years. Shelves: re-readables , orange-you-glad , children-s-literature , funny , fiction.

This is a strange little book, taking place in a sort of goofily nightmarish wonderland where young Jacob Two-Two so called for his habit of saying everything twice ends up in a bizarre prison for disrespectful and unruly children.

However, I thought this was a very clever and funny book, and well worth reading. This passage from the book sums up the charming weirdness better than I ever could: "I do hope that you've finished every last delicious drop of your good-night glass of curdled wolveri This is a strange little book, taking place in a sort of goofily nightmarish wonderland where young Jacob Two-Two so called for his habit of saying everything twice ends up in a bizarre prison for disrespectful and unruly children.

This passage from the book sums up the charming weirdness better than I ever could: "I do hope that you've finished every last delicious drop of your good-night glass of curdled wolverine's milk and that you are all nicely tucked in on your cold, splintery bed boards, with your cell doors firmly locked, because oh, dear, oh, dear, one of our snakes is missing and is rumored to be slithering through the cellblocks right now in search of some tasty toes.

Pre-millenium Roald Dahl-like children's book with Edward Gorey-like illustrations about little kid who is threatened by a bogeyman with jail time.
